Medical records for elderly patients are usually voluminous, simply because the geriatric patient generally has a multitude of medical issues directly related to the process of aging and chronic illness. Introduction
It is estimated that each year between 1 and 3 million people in the United States develop pressure injuries. In skilled nursing facilities, it is estimated that up to 28% of patients suffer pressure injuries. The numbers increase dramatically with patients in high-risk groups such as quadriplegics suffering pressure ulcer injuries (National Pressure Ulcer Advisory Panel, 2009). Because some pressure injuries may be preventable with proper nursing care, these cases are often ripe for litigation.

The LNC usually doesn’t care about settlements so much, but it is interesting for any healthcare provider to be aware of the various levels of settlements related to nursing facility negligence cases. In the 7 years following the enactment of OBRA, the federal regulations mandated for all US nursing homes, the average award in nursing home negligence cases nearly doubled to approximately $525,000.
